Rules & FAQ's

What point system will be used?

The point system will be based on the IBJJF point scoring system.

A takedown, sweep, or knee on belly is worth 2 points, passing the guard is worth 3 points, and the mount and back are worth 4 points.

How long will the match be?

Match time will be 6 minutes long.

The match will have two separate components. The first 3 minutes will be submission only where there are no points involved.

At the 3 minute mark the referee will signal the points period where points will now be in play for the remainder of the match.

How will stalling be handled?

The referee will call for action after 10 seconds of stalling then a stalling penalty for lack of combativeness after 20 seconds. Each stalling call will result in 1 negative penalty. The negative penalty will be counted against your overall score at the end of the match. If you receive 3 stalling calls that will result in an automatic loss.

What submissions are legal?

All IBJJF NoGi Black Belt submissions are legal. This includes armbars, kimuras, shoulder locks, wrist locks, all foot locks, toe holds, knee bars, heel hooks, calf and bicep slicers, and of course all strangles.

What submissions and techniques are illegal?

Spinal locks, scissor takedowns, slams, small joint manipulation, and jumping closed guard.

Will there be advantages?

No. There will be no advantages in this event. You must clearly score to secure your points.

Can you pull guard without contact?

Yes. You may elect to pull guard without making contact.

In the event of a double guard pull, the referee will initiate a 20 second clock for someone to take top position. The athlete who takes top position will be rewarded with one point. If neither athlete takes top position at the end of the 20 seconds, both athletes will receive a negative and restart on their feet.

Does the body triangle count as a back take?

Yes. Body triangle will be considered a back take and awarded 4 points.

What if the match ends in a tie?

There will be a 3 minute OT round where the same point scoring rules will carry over.

In the event that the match is still tied after OT, it will go to a referee decision.
